How to compare AI voice platforms without wasting a week
Every platform’s marketing page says “realistic voices”. Six things actually differ, and five of them you can test in an afternoon with your own script.
The six things that differ
- Language and accent coverage that matches your audience. Not the length of the language list — whether the specific language you publish in sounds right. Test with your own script, not the demo text.
- Code-mixing behaviour. If you write Hinglish or any English-inflected Indian language, paste a real sentence and listen for missing words, not just accent. Silent word-dropping is the failure that catches people out. We wrote up why in Hinglish text to speech.
- Effective cost per minute at your volume. Divide the monthly price by the minutes you will actually use, including regenerations. Credit systems make this arithmetic deliberately awkward; do it anyway.
- Payment method and currency. Whether you can pay in your own currency, by the method you have. This is a bigger practical barrier for Indian buyers than any quality difference.
- Consent and safety posture. Ask four questions: is consent captured and stored, are submitted recordings screened, is output watermarked, is there a monitored abuse route. A provider that cannot answer plainly is telling you something.
- Ecosystem depth. API maturity, integrations, dubbing tools, voice marketplaces, SDKs. This is where established platforms are genuinely ahead of newer ones, including us.
How to run the test in an afternoon
- Take one script you have actually published — not a sample paragraph. Include the brand names, numbers and code-mixing that are really in it.
- Generate it on the free tier of each platform you are considering.
- Listen for three things in order: missing words, then wrong pronunciation of names and numbers, then overall naturalness. Most people evaluate in the reverse order and pick a tool that will fail them on the first.
- Compute effective cost per minute at your real monthly volume, not the headline price.
- Play the best two to someone who speaks the language natively and was not involved in choosing.
Where we are honestly not the answer
Mayantar is an India-first product built around Indian languages, rupee pricing and creator workflows. If your requirements are:
- a production API with SDKs and integrations today — we do not publish a public API yet, and an established platform will serve you better;
- a large marketplace of licensed stock voices — that is not what we are;
- peak emotional performance in English — the frontier English platforms remain ahead, and no amount of positioning changes that.
We would rather you read that here than discover it after paying us. Where we do win is set out — with the reasoning — on the alternatives page.
