French is one of the languages where written text and spoken text diverge most. Final consonants are usually silent, except when a liaison links them to the next word; elision collapses "le arbre" into "l'arbre". The model has learned these patterns from speech, which means it generally gets them right from ordinary written French — but it also means punctuation matters more here than in a phonetic orthography, because a comma blocks a liaison.
In practice: write proper French, including apostrophes and accents, and read your text aloud once before generating. Where you would pause, put a comma.
What is different about generating French
- Reference recordings for this language are capped at 12 seconds, the same limit used throughout Mayantar.
- Accents are load-bearing, not decoration. "ou" and "où", "a" and "à", "e" and "é" are different words and are pronounced as written.
- Punctuation controls liaison. A comma between two words stops the model linking them, which is the fastest fix when a phrase comes out running together.
- Numerals are read as French numbers, including the seventy-to-ninety compounds. If you need Belgian or Swiss forms (septante, nonante), write them as words.
- Cloning is cross-lingual: a voice cloned from a clip in one language can generate in another on this path. It works, but it is not free — accent from the reference language carries over. Record in the language you intend to publish in unless a foreign accent is the point.
Recording a French reference clip
Mayantar ships written prompts for English and the Indian languages; for French the recorder offers the English prompts as a starting point, and you are better off reading French of your own. Anything works as long as it is you talking normally — introduce yourself, describe what you are working on, read a paragraph of your own script.
Aim to fill most of the 12-second limit, keep it in one take, and include a question if you can: rising intonation is the thing a clone most often lacks when the reference was a flat, careful read.
The checks your clip has to pass — and the specific reasons clips get rejected — are in our guide to recording a reference clip.
French voice generation: common questions
Does it handle liaison correctly?
Usually, because it learned French from French speech rather than from spelling rules. Where it links two words you wanted separated, add a comma; where it fails to link, removing punctuation between them normally fixes it.
Is the Mayantar interface available in French?
The interface and the generation language are separate settings. Mayantar's interface ships in eleven languages, and the audio it generates can be in any of thirty-four — so you can run the app in English and generate French, or the other way round where both are offered.
