Hangul is a featural alphabet and maps to sound far more directly than kanji does, which removes most of the ambiguity that makes Japanese and Chinese harder to generate. Korean's own complication is elsewhere: assimilation rules mean written and spoken forms differ systematically — 신라 is spoken as 실라 — and the model applies these from ordinary written Korean rather than needing phonetic input.

The other thing to be deliberate about is speech level. Formal 합니다 and casual 해요 endings are not stylistic variants; they place the speaker relative to the listener. Write the level you mean.

What is different about generating Korean

  • Reference recordings for this language are capped at 12 seconds, the same limit used throughout Mayantar.
  • Write standard Hangul, not phonetic respelling. Assimilation and liaison are applied by the model; spelling words as they sound breaks the mapping it learned.
  • Speech level comes from your text. The model reads the endings you wrote — it does not adjust formality for you.
  • Spacing (띄어쓰기) affects phrasing. Korean spacing rules are load-bearing for prosody, so unspaced text runs together in the output too.
  • Cloning is cross-lingual: a voice cloned from a clip in one language can generate in another on this path. It works, but it is not free — accent from the reference language carries over. Record in the language you intend to publish in unless a foreign accent is the point.

Recording a Korean reference clip

Mayantar ships written prompts for English and the Indian languages; for Korean the recorder offers the English prompts as a starting point, and you are better off reading Korean of your own. Anything works as long as it is you talking normally — introduce yourself, describe what you are working on, read a paragraph of your own script.

Aim to fill most of the 12-second limit, keep it in one take, and include a question if you can: rising intonation is the thing a clone most often lacks when the reference was a flat, careful read.

The checks your clip has to pass — and the specific reasons clips get rejected — are in our guide to recording a reference clip.

Korean voice generation: common questions

Does it handle Korean formality levels?

It reads whichever level you write. Formality lives in the verb endings, so a script written in 해요체 generates as 해요체 — there is no separate politeness setting.

Is the Mayantar interface available in Korean?

The interface and the generation language are separate settings. Mayantar's interface ships in eleven languages, and the audio it generates can be in any of thirty-four — so you can run the app in English and generate Korean, or the other way round where both are offered.
