Danish is famously harder to synthesise than its neighbours, for a reason worth knowing: the gap between spelling and speech is unusually wide. Consonants soften or disappear, vowels reduce heavily, and stød — a creaky-voice catch that distinguishes word pairs — is not written at all.
The practical consequence is that Danish output is more sensitive to the reference clip than Swedish or Norwegian output. A clear, unhurried Danish reference is worth more here than in most languages.
What is different about generating Danish
- Reference recordings for this language are capped at 12 seconds, the same limit used throughout Mayantar.
- æ, ø and å are separate letters. The ae/oe/aa substitutions are read as letter sequences.
- Stød is not written and is inferred; it is one of the properties that transfers most strongly from the reference recording, so record clearly.
- Danish spelling is conservative relative to its pronunciation. Write standard Danish rather than phonetic approximations — the model learned the mapping and phonetic spelling breaks it.
- Cloning is cross-lingual: a voice cloned from a clip in one language can generate in another on this path. It works, but it is not free — accent from the reference language carries over. Record in the language you intend to publish in unless a foreign accent is the point.
Recording a Danish reference clip
Mayantar ships written prompts for English and the Indian languages; for Danish the recorder offers the English prompts as a starting point, and you are better off reading Danish of your own. Anything works as long as it is you talking normally — introduce yourself, describe what you are working on, read a paragraph of your own script.
Aim to fill most of the 12-second limit, keep it in one take, and include a question if you can: rising intonation is the thing a clone most often lacks when the reference was a flat, careful read.
The checks your clip has to pass — and the specific reasons clips get rejected — are in our guide to recording a reference clip.
Danish voice generation: common questions
Why does Danish need a cleaner reference clip than other languages?
Because more of Danish phonology is carried in voice quality — stød, vowel reduction, softened consonants — rather than in the spelling. The model has less written signal to work from, so the audio signal matters more.
Is the Mayantar interface available in Danish?
The interface and the generation language are separate settings. Mayantar's interface ships in eleven languages, and the audio it generates can be in any of thirty-four — so you can run the app in English and generate Danish, or the other way round where both are offered.
