Swedish is one of the few European languages with a pitch accent: anden means the duck with one tone and the spirit with another, and the difference is melody rather than stress. This is learned from speech and reproduced from context, and it is also the property most likely to sound subtly wrong in a synthesiser that was not trained on Swedish prosody.
Because pitch accent lives in the melody, it also carries strongly from a reference clip — which is an argument for recording your own rather than relying on a preset if Swedish listeners are your audience.
What is different about generating Swedish
- Reference recordings for this language are capped at 12 seconds, the same limit used throughout Mayantar.
- å, ä and ö are separate letters, not decorated a and o. Substituting aa/ae/oe changes the words.
- The pitch-accent distinction is reproduced from context; there is no markup for it. For a minimal pair in an ambiguous sentence, rephrasing is more reliable than notation.
- Compounds are written closed in Swedish and are read as single units — writing them apart, the common särskrivning error, changes both the meaning and the delivery.
- Cloning is cross-lingual: a voice cloned from a clip in one language can generate in another on this path. It works, but it is not free — accent from the reference language carries over. Record in the language you intend to publish in unless a foreign accent is the point.
Recording a Swedish reference clip
Mayantar ships written prompts for English and the Indian languages; for Swedish the recorder offers the English prompts as a starting point, and you are better off reading Swedish of your own. Anything works as long as it is you talking normally — introduce yourself, describe what you are working on, read a paragraph of your own script.
Aim to fill most of the 12-second limit, keep it in one take, and include a question if you can: rising intonation is the thing a clone most often lacks when the reference was a flat, careful read.
The checks your clip has to pass — and the specific reasons clips get rejected — are in our guide to recording a reference clip.
Swedish voice generation: common questions
Does it reproduce Swedish pitch accent?
Yes, as a learned property of the language rather than a setting. It is inferred from context and carried from the reference clip's own prosody.
Is the Mayantar interface available in Swedish?
The interface and the generation language are separate settings. Mayantar's interface ships in eleven languages, and the audio it generates can be in any of thirty-four — so you can run the app in English and generate Swedish, or the other way round where both are offered.
