Italian orthography is close to phonetic, which makes it one of the more predictable languages on this path — what you type is very nearly what you hear. The two things that still trip people up are geminate consonants and stress.

Doubled consonants are phonemic: "copia" and "coppia" are different words and the model distinguishes them, so a typo in a double letter changes the meaning rather than just the sound.

What is different about generating Italian

  • Reference recordings for this language are capped at 12 seconds, the same limit used throughout Mayantar.
  • Geminates are real. Write the double consonant where the word has one — the model pronounces the length difference and will not correct a single-letter typo for you.
  • Stress accents on final syllables (perché, città, più) should be typed. Italian only marks stress where it is irregular, and omitting the mark can shift the reading.
  • Elision with apostrophes (dell'acqua, l'ora) is read as one prosodic unit; writing the words separately produces a small unnatural break.
  • Cloning is cross-lingual: a voice cloned from a clip in one language can generate in another on this path. It works, but it is not free — accent from the reference language carries over. Record in the language you intend to publish in unless a foreign accent is the point.

Recording a Italian reference clip

Mayantar ships written prompts for English and the Indian languages; for Italian the recorder offers the English prompts as a starting point, and you are better off reading Italian of your own. Anything works as long as it is you talking normally — introduce yourself, describe what you are working on, read a paragraph of your own script.

Aim to fill most of the 12-second limit, keep it in one take, and include a question if you can: rising intonation is the thing a clone most often lacks when the reference was a flat, careful read.

The checks your clip has to pass — and the specific reasons clips get rejected — are in our guide to recording a reference clip.

Italian voice generation: common questions

Does it get Italian stress right?

In the large majority of cases, because it learned from speech rather than a rule table. Where a word is ambiguous — the classic principi/prìncipi type — writing the accent resolves it.

Is the Mayantar interface available in Italian?

The interface and the generation language are separate settings. Mayantar's interface ships in eleven languages, and the audio it generates can be in any of thirty-four — so you can run the app in English and generate Italian, or the other way round where both are offered.
